The S1 subunit of the Spike glycoprotein is mediating binding to the host cell receptor and neutralizing antibodies often target its receptor binding domain (RBD). This RBD has been shown to be highly divergent from that of other Coronaviruses which makes it one of the most specific tools for detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.
